Dorset Flowscapes connects communities across Dorset with the land, rivers and sea they depend on, helping nature recovery take root through shared stories and local action

“Flowscapes are interconnected, functional living systems that incorporate surface water catchments and their associated areas of ocean influence.”

What is Dorset Flowscapes?
Our work begins where land meets water. We help create events, campaigns and connected community action that listen, integrate, process and formulate collective responses rooted in trust, presence, and longevity.
Our work aims to shift the way we relate to ecosystems by weaving together scientific, local, and cultural knowledge. By restoring ecological processes we can also restore our sense of belonging and relationships to each other through this work.
Who is Community? Everyone: people learning from and with nature recovery organisations, land owners and managers, and everyone living and working in our towns and countryside. We can stay emergent, adaptive and work collaboratively in really wholesome ways to revitalise our collective capacity to care for land, water and one another.

Dynamic clay and gravel-bed rivers, greensand brooks, pure and precious chalkstream and heathland waters.
These are living threads of vitality through Flowscapes and with their flow lies opportunities to nurture salmon, trout, kingfisher and damselfly and all the living processes, communities and our story of a place.
LIVING THREADS OF CONNECTION BETWEEN INLAND WORLD AND DEEP SEA
Restoring the living processes that sustain us
Fragmentation. Science is separated from story, ecology from community, restoration from lived experience. This disconnection weakens ecological recovery and erodes our collective capacity to care for Flowscapes and each other.
Our approach is rooted in listening and reflexive learning, systems awareness and co-creation. We weave Flowscape restoration together with joy, connection and belonging, embracing cultural imagination and apolitical, invitational openness.
Communities uncover shared stories about rivers, heritage, and future possibility. The Flowscapes Circle holds the work; a growing community is connected and enabled to carry it forward - a defining river story for Dorset, adaptable to each unique local Flowscape.
We hold space for emergence. By creating the conditions for wholesome connection and nature recovery to occur, we are not preoccupied with difficult-to-predict outcomes. Our core principles and a One Health, Nature-Connectedness approach guide us to connect with community as active participants - ecological renewal and cultural renewal are inseparable. Flowscapes and their communities thriving together.

Living threads — connecting headwaters to sea, people to place, stories to action.
From our headwaters to the deep ocean
Flowscapes connect springs, ponds, flood plains, wetlands, harbour and seas, supporting salmon, eels, otters, sea trout, dragonflies, beavers and many species shaped by Dorset's coastal catchments. They provide joy, stories, recreation and livelihoods for those of us that live and work here.

The Roadmap for Recovery
The Flowscapes Circle is formed — landowners, ecologists, artists, scientists, anglers and river guardians gathering to shape a shared way of working and establish the relational foundations we grow from and with.
County-wide creative engagement gatherings across Dorset to explore and understand how communities relate to their waters today, and how they want to relate to them in the future, and to find out what stories, old and new, emerge.
What we heard becomes a shared narrative for Dorset — a living thread woven from the voices, histories, and hopes of each Flowscape, holding the work of recovery in a common language that every community can recognise and carry forward.
The Dorset-Wide Flowscapes Charter is a first step in creating the infrastructure for county-wide commitments to our rivers — it is a stepping stone. The Pledge turns listening across each Flowscape into action, sharing how communities, landholders and partners intend to develop care for their waters together. It is an invitation for everyone who belongs to a Flowscape to sign up to caring for it.
People protect what they love, understand and feel connected to. Join Dorset Flowscapes - participate in shaping the story, restoring our living systems and exploring the relationships that sustain them.
